How to Clean and Maintain Laminate Flooring

A lot of homeowners are choosing laminate flooring as opposed to tile, stone or hardwood, for a variety of reasons. Laminate flooring is easy to install; a fairly handy do-it-yourselfer can do it in an afternoon. It's almost always cheaper than other types of flooring, as well. Despite its advantages, there are some things you should keep in mind when you have laminate floors. Because it is made from wood pressed onto a sticky backing, adhesives used during the installation should be cleaned immediately. Here are some tips on how to clean and maintain laminate flooring.

1. Be sure to vacuum the floor often, with a stick vac. Using a stick vac will prevent the scratches that can come when using a vacuum with a brush roller.

2. Use a dust mop or a swivel sweeper to clean your floor on days you skip vacuuming. Don't use a broom, because the straws scratch the laminate.

3. If something spills, wipe it up immediately, especially if it's something that can stain the floor. Use a soft cloth or paper towel to wipe up the mess, then clean the area with a slightly wet cloth. If you leave a spill on the floor, it can cause the laminate to fade.

4. When mopping, use a solution of warm water and liquid soap. Don't overdo the soap, because the excess can leave a sticky film on the floor. Stay away from mop-and-shine products, waxes, or oil-based products, because they can dull the floor's finish.

When you install laminate flooring, read the manufacturer warranty carefully to learn which methods are recommended to clean the floor. Some floor makers suggest vinegar or ammonia, and some make other suggestions. Be sure to follow the instructions so that you don't void the warranty.
